Best time to trek in the Churah valley
Best Season for Trekking in Churah Valley
The Churah Valley, with its relatively high altitude, offers a seasonal trekking window from late spring to early autumn, typically from May or June through October. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect during these months:
- May to Early June:
During these early summer months, the lower-altitude treks become accessible as the snow begins to melt. However, some higher-altitude trails may still be blocked by lingering snow, so it’s best to plan your routes accordingly. - July to Early September (Monsoon Season):
The Churah Valley experiences a relatively mild monsoon compared to other Himalayan regions. While rainfall is present, it’s generally not heavy enough to deter trekking, making this a viable option for adventurous travelers seeking lush greenery and fewer crowds. - September to October (Post-Monsoon Season):
This is arguably the best time to trek in Churah Valley. With the rains gone, the skies are usually clear, offering breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. The temperatures during the day are pleasant, but nights can get chilly, with lows approaching zero degrees Celsius. Packing warm clothing is essential for overnight treks during this period.

Gadasaru lake trek
The Gadasaru Mahadev Lake, nestled in the upper reaches of the Churah Valley within the Nosradhar range, holds a revered place in the cultural and spiritual landscape of Chamba district. Known as the largest sacred lake of the region, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has been a site of devotion for generations. This high-altitude lake becomes the center of pilgrimage during the auspicious period between Radhashtami and Krishna Janmashtami, drawing devotees from Churah Valley and beyond to partake in its spiritual and cultural significance.
What sets the Gadasaru Mahadev Lake apart is its unique dal yatra (circumambulatory procession). It is the only sacred lake in Chamba where devotees perform a complete circuit around the water, a ritual deeply rooted in local traditions. The lake’s significance is further highlighted during the Gandasru Mahadev festival, which is celebrated alongside the famous Manimahesh Dal Yatra.
About 1.5 km from Gadasaru Lake lies another intriguing feature of this region: Mahakali Dal. This smaller, intensely dark lake exudes an air of mystery and is regarded with a mix of reverence and caution by locals, who associate it with the formidable goddess Kali.
The trek to Gadasaru Lake is not just a spiritual journey but an adventure into one of Himachal Pradesh’s lesser-explored terrains. Over the course of three nights under the stars, you’ll camp in pristine settings, with Himalayan Ecotourism providing expert guidance, reliable camping equipment, and nourishing meals to ensure your trek is as seamless as it is memorable.
