The trek involves the ascent of four passes, each nearing an altitude of 5,000 meters. From Skiu to Stok, the total elevation gain is approximately 2,500 meters. However, if you extend the trek to Shang Sumdo, the cumulative climb reaches 4,650 meters. The challenge of this trek lies in the physical demands required to conquer these high passes.

Le meilleur moment pour faire une randonnée dans la vallée de Markha est de mai à septembre. En début de saison, vous ne pourrez peut-être pas franchir les cols de haute altitude à cause de la neige.

The route rewards travelers with some of the most captivating scenery in the region. Day Two : Skiu (3400m) to Shingo (4200m)

After breakfast, we begin our trek towards Shingo. The 8 km trek to Shingo, which takes about 4-5 hours meanders through picturesque landscapes, giving you a glimpse of the serene beauty that awaits. Upon reaching Shingo, we'll be welcomed by its serene charm. This remote village, perched at a higher altitude, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Take some time to relax and explore the village, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and marveling at the picturesque scenery. In the evening, we’ll gather for a hearty meal, sharing stories and reflecting on the day’s trek. The night in Shingo will be a tranquil respite, surrounded by the majestic beauty of the mountains, preparing us for the adventures of the days to come. |
Day Three : Shingo to Yurutse/Rumbak via Ganda La

Your journey continues as you trek from Shingo to Yurutse via Ganda La. This pass, perched at 4968m, offers stunning panoramic views of the Stok Range. After crossing the pass, you’ll descend to Yurutse, a remote village at 3900m. This day’s trek requires an elevation gain of 930m and provides breathtaking views throughout. Yurutse, with its tranquil wilderness, offers solitude. For those seeking a bit more interaction, Rumbak is just an hour further along, with a more populated village atmosphere. Day Four : Yurutse/Rumbak to Mankarmo via Stok La

Climb the Stok La pass at 4880m and descend to Mankarmo camp to spend the night under the starry sky. Mankarmo is situated at an altitude of 4380m. The Mankarmo camp has become as popular as the camp that acts as a base camp for the Stok Kangri summit. In recent years another higher base camp has been established 500/600m higher to the camp of Mankarmo. |
Day Five : Mankarmo to Gangpoche via Matho La

The Matho La pass is situated at an altitude of 4960m. We will spend the night at Gangpoche village which is situated at approximately 4400m. Gangpoche, a picturesque expanse of grazing meadows in Matho Valley, extends directly ahead of the shepherd huts. This serene landscape is set against a dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains and expansive skies, creating a stunning and tranquil environment for both villagers and their livestock. |
Day Six : Gangpoche to Shang Sumdo

Last day of the trek we reach Shang Sumdo. Today will be an exhausting day as we will be trekking for 9-10 hours to reach the end of our trek. Shang Sumdo is a beautiful hamlet situated at the confluence of Shang river that flows from the south of the Matho Kangri peak. You may either spend the night at Shang Sumdo or drive to Leh. Given that the drive to Leh will be another 2 hours, we recommend you relax for the night in the village and proceed to Leh in the morning. |
