Zanskar trek – Kanji to Lingshed
Zanskar Trek – Part 1 : Kanji to Lingshed
Zanskar has long been a dream destination for trekkers exploring Ladakh. Since the 1970s, this remote Himalayan region has attracted adventurers with its dramatic desert landscapes, towering peaks, and deep river gorges. With altitudes ranging from 3,000 to 7,000 meters, Zanskar offers one of the most isolated and pristine trekking experiences in the world.
Despite its extreme remoteness, Zanskar is home to scattered villages, where trekkers can experience the unique lifestyle of the Zanskari people. These communities, surviving in a harsh high-altitude environment with minimal rainfall, have maintained their traditions for centuries. One of the most fascinating villages on this trek is Lingshed, known for its ancient Lingshed Gompa, a Gelugpa Buddhist monastery with a thriving monastic community.

Why Choose This Zanskar Trek?
Until recently, the classic Lamayuru to Padum trek was the most famous route across Zanskar. However, the construction of a road through the valley has altered the trekking landscape. Many traditional routes have become less appealing as motorized transport reaches once-isolated areas.
At Himalayan Ecotourism, we believe that trekking is an essential part of responsible tourism, benefiting local communities while preserving Zanskar’s fragile ecosystem. That’s why we continue to develop and promote new trekking routes that remain untouched by roads.
This Kanji to Lingshed trek is a stunning alternative to the old Lamayuru-to-Padum route. It offers:
- No roads – pure wilderness trekking
- High mountain passes and spectacular camping spots
- Traditional homestay experiences in remote villages
- Rarely traveled trails, offering solitude and adventure
Lingshed – A Hidden Gem of Zanskar
Reaching Lingshed village at the end of this trek is a truly rewarding experience. Located deep in the mountains, Lingshed is one of the oldest inhabited villages in Zanskar, dating back nearly 1,000 years. The Lingshed Gompa, perched on a rocky hill, is a cultural and spiritual highlight, home to monks who continue ancient Buddhist traditions in this remote land.
We recommend spending an extra day or two in Lingshed to immerse yourself in the authentic Zanskari way of life. Himalayan Ecotourism works closely with the local villagers to promote sustainable tourism that helps preserve their traditional lifestyle while providing economic opportunities.
If you’re looking for a challenging and authentic trekking experience in Zanskar, this route from Kanji to Lingshed is the perfect way to explore the untouched beauty of this legendary Himalayan region.
