are comparatively less well known than Ladakh regions, and yet...
On the tourist map, they do not have much to envy their grand neighbor to the Northwest - Ladakh. The tour of Lahaul and Spiti is an excellent introduction to the Western Himalayas.
There are similarities to Ladakh, but the experience is different. In Lahaul Spiti, we are at the gates of Tibet and in a different biological, geological and cultural environment.
The road through Lahaul and Spiti is a loop. There are two ways to reach the region, by the Southwest or the Southeast. We will do this by the Southeast route. So we visit Spiti first followed by Lahaul.
While on the way to Ladakh, the line between the regions watered by monsoon and those that are not is very clear and abrupt. Traveling to Spiti leads us progressively from the 'Green Himalayas' to the 'Himalayas of high altitude deserts'.
In fact, during our tours to Lahaul & Spiti, we will go back up the large Spiti river to its source. We will cross the forested mountains of Kinnaur district through steep canyons prone to landslides during the rainy season. Then gradually the thick cloudy sky of the monsoon opens up while the greens become scarce.
The climb is gentle. You will not suffer from altitude sickness, and the valley changes stage to stage.
We will come across very old Buddhists monastery, including Tabo and Komic that are more than a thousand years old. The Kye monastery, a more recent one, is one of the most important Tibetan Buddhism learning centres worldwide. It has an impressive position and architecture which reminds one of medieval fortresses.
Chandra Tal Lake (the Lake of the Moon), though smaller than those of Ladakh, is located in an exceptionally beautiful environment.
Lahaul and Spiti should be your next Himalayan destination! The tour of Lahaul and Spiti can be done from July to October.
