Who are we?

A social enterprise in the heart of the Western Himalayas

Where are we?

Himalayan Ecotourism is based in Himachal Pradesh, India. This is in the ‘Green’ Himalayas with evergreen forests and alpine meadows.

We are located on the outskirts of the GHNP (Great Himalayan National Park), a relatively new national park established in 1999 which was inscribed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in June 2014.

We are located close to the major tourist hubs in Himachal Pradesh – Lahaul, Spiti, Shimla, Dharamshala, Kull-Manali. We are also on the main road from New Delhi and the Indian plains to Ladakh, Zanskar and Lahaul Spiti via the Rohtang Pass.

This position in the hearth of the Western Himalayas presents two major advantages.

Firstly, we have "roots" in all the regions that we propose to you. We are not an operator organizing circuits in regions hundreds or thousands of miles away from us. We are based in the region we operate in and you will travel with local people.

Secondly, we don’t take you from A to B but help you appreciate and enjoy the places along the way.
While other tour operators can book you on a 3 hours flight from Delhi to Leh, Ladakh, we will take you on a journey by road through the mountain passes over the Rohtang Pass and cross from green Kullu valley to the dry desolate high-altitude Ladakh valley.
The overall experience of travelling with locals and enjoying places on the way will be more enriching.

Social Enterprise?

Himalayan Ecotourism has social, economic and environmental goals. Its founder is an experienced consultant in rural development. He has a vision for social, economic and environmental development based on more than 10 years of consultancy in rural India.

Unlike most tourism operators, our business structure is not pyramidal or hierarchical. Each member is a partner and a shareholder. We are a cooperative.

75 Members of the community living in the ecozone of the GHNP (Great Himalayan National Park) have joined the cooperative as mountain guides, cooks and porters. They all have an equal share of the capital of the cooperative. They are the ones who will accompany you on your travels.

20 per cent of the total price of the trekking packages in the GHNP will go directly to the cooperative as profit. The profit is managed collectively and a large part is devoted to support eco-development projects.

We are also doing our best to ensure the safety and comfort of your local hosts during your travels. The porters carry maximum of 20 kg. We are also reinvesting a portion of the profits in equipment – bags, shoes, tents, sleeping bags and warm clothing. You will feel the difference it makes in your overall experience by having happy guides, cooks and porters!

We have form in parallel a firm that supports the activities of marketing and management.
Himalayan Ecotourism is the joint venture of the co-operative and the firm. We promote the activities of the co-operative and market its services. We also assist the co-operative in promoting eco-development of the region.
